All the way to Roman times. From roughly the 1st century BCE to the 5thcentury CE, there existed a breed of “broad-mouth” dogs who fought alongside Roman soldiers. Called Alaunts, this breed was eventually introduced to Britain when the Romans invaded in 43 CE
In 43 CE, Britain was inhabited by the Celtic Britons and was under Roman rule as the province of Britannia. The Roman invasion of Britain began in 43 CE under Emperor Claudius, who ordered the invasion and placed Aulus Plautius in command. The Romans quickly gained control of the tribes in present-day southeastern England, and the conquest was largely completed by 87 CE in the southern half of Britain. However, the conquest was a long process, and the Romans abandoned Britain in 410 CE after more than three and a half centuries of rule and from this point the Bulldog was able to develop into something closer to what we’re familiar with in Bulldog type dogs we know and love today. Unfortunately for the dogs of the past times were brutal and so were the sports associated with them. Ironically the brutality of the days activities back then created these amazing companions we cherish now and in order to preserve the historical traits and preserve a dog sound in body and temperament a modern sport specific to these dogs is needed.
